30 days. 50,000 words. No sweat.

Sunday, October 06, 2002

I've been doing the math on how much I'd need to write per day to meet the goal of 50,000 words in November. It's 1,667 words per day, but I didn't know how long that might take & I don't have hours to write every day. So I figured it out per minute...

If I could write 5 hours a day (which is unlikely to happen more than once or twice, with 2 small kids!), I'd need to average 5.56 words per minute. Not bad, but with less time the average would need to be:

4 hours - 6.95 words per minute
3 hours - 9.26 words per minute
2 hours - 13.9 words per minute
1 hour - 27.78 words per minute

I'm at an advantage here because I can type about 70 wpm on a good day. Not that my brain will probably work that fast! But I am sure from experience that I'll be brainstorming ideas for the story a lot during my "off" hours, so maybe there'll be something to write (and maybe some notes in my PDA...) when I sit down for writing time. Realizing I could possibly do this without investing 4 or 5 hours of intensive writing every day has made me relax a lot about the whole thing!
