![]() I tried out my new Stowaway Palm keyboard and WordSmith software last night by typing about 350 words of musings on my novel characters. The keyboard & software are way cool, though I'm concerned because the word count feature in WordSmith was 74 higher than MS Word's word count for the same short story of mine. MS Word is used for the official NaNoWriMo word count, so if I write in WordSmith a lot, I may think I'm closer to the 50,000-word goal than I am! Anyway, the stuff I wrote about the novel last night just got me more confused. I felt sure I wanted my main character to spend most of the book on a road trip, but now I'm getting intrigued by her relationship with her neighbor & am not sure I want the neighbor "offscreen" for most of the book. Hmm... I'm trying to just forget about the novel stuff for now, though, & finish up the other writing I need to clear my brain of before November. I have to rewrite the end of my story "Ending Some of It," which I plan to send to ByLine's subscriber-only fiction contest (Nov. 1 due date). Then I want to finish my children's magazine story & send that out by this Friday or Saturday (though the beginning is driving me nuts right now). I also hope to polish the picture book story I'm working on enough to send it to an editor I met at a conference, and write a short article about writing. It's so hard for me to write short. I'm thinking NaNo might just work for me, because I have such a hard time "writing tight" & not being long-winded! posted by Alison | 2:53 PM
